Suicidal Ideation in Relation to Life Stress, Coping Strategies and Depression among Nursing Students at One University

Abstract
Purpose: This study is designed to investigate levels and relationships of stress, coping with stress, depression, and suicidal ideation among students at one university.

Method: This study was a cross-sectional survey. The study participants were 418 students from D University in Gyunggido. A structured self-reporting questionnaire was used to identify the participants¡¯ demographic characteristics, stress, coping strategies, depression, and suicidal ideation. The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation using SPSS WIN 20.0.

Results: Passive styles in ways of coping with stress have shown high scores in female, students having experiences which friends committed suicide. Active styles in ways of coping with stress have shown high scores in male, third grade and the low level of satisfaction with school quality. The suicidal ideation has significant correlations with gender, grade, levels of satisfaction with school quality, a suicide attempt, a consultation with an expert, and personal experience of acquaintance¡¯s suicide.

Conclusion: The high scores of life stress have increased the levels of depression, suicidal ideation and passive coping styles with the stress. Therefore, many universities should develop the supportive system and the effective strategies for stress intervention.
